Apps and Memberships

Here are some Apps (iOS) and Memberships that we can't live without. We've tried several, still trying a few, and got rid of many. Here are the apps and memberships that have passed the 2RT Classroom Test!

Camping, Glamping, Boondocking, Moochdocking, etc...

Harvest Hosts

Harvest Hosts has been a great way for us to meet and support local businesses. Not just wineries and breweries but also golf courses, farms, museums and more.

There are over 1300+ places to stay overnight. They just ask that you support them in some small way for staying at their place.

We enjoy a glass of wine and this just gives us an excuse to try something new, meet new people, and see a new area while doing what we love.

Check out our referral link for 15% off your Harvest Hosts membership.

Boondockers Welcome

To us Boondockers Welcome is not just a way for us to save on camping, it’s a community. It’s RVers helping RVers and is a great way for RVers to connect with each other. Haven’t heard about this awesome RV community? Check it out using our link.

Campendium

Not sure of where to stay? Check out Campendium and check out what other people say about that unknown private or state park, national park and more!

This is a great resource to find just the right spot for you.

Cat Scales

https://catscale.com/cat-scale-apps/

We weigh our rig regularly. It's really easy to do with the Cat Scales app. Just locate the Cat Scales that you would like to stop at. Use the location services on the app. and make sure you are logged in. Drive onto the scale and line up your RV and put in the number on the scale. It will ask for your payment which for us is saved in the app and press OK. You will get a confirmation and the attendant will make sure you have the right account and they will say hold on... wait a few seconds and they will come back on to confirm that you are all set. You can go in to retrieve the paper copy or you can wait for the pdf in your email.

Cost per weight is around $12

Revolutionizes how professional truck drives weigh their trucks!

Google Maps

Google Maps iOS

Kunio uses Google Maps for updating our website regularly. Michelle uses RV Trip Wizard and the Garmin 770 GPS unit for directions.

We both use Google Maps for searching places to go, hike, eat, etc... It is a wonderful resource that is pretty comprehensive and easy to use.

Track routes, and save places that you've visited as well as places that you want to go!

Garmin RV 770

This is not an app but an invaluable standalone tool. It updates easily with WiFi connection and has lifetime maps update which is extremely important.

The Garmin 770 for RV lets you put your your RV height, and other dimensions to help you navigate. It is not foolproof but used in conjunction with  Google Maps, RV Trip Wizard, and the truckers atlas, you can safely find a route that won't take off your air conditioner! lol

The Garmin 770 (as of Oct. 2020) is $299 on the Garmin website.

The updated Garmin for RV is the 890 and has many upgraded features. As of Oct. 2020 it is $499 on the Garmin website.

RV Trip Wizard

Now part of RV Life is an amazing tool for planning and navigation.

Check out Michelle's Blog Post about how she plans and uses RV Trip Wizard. She is an amazing tour guide and planner!

RV Trip Wizard offers a 7 day free trial! Check it out.

We are not going to use RV Life at this point. We feel that through planning with RV Trip Wizard, Google Maps and the Truckers Atlas that we are well prepared. RV Life GPS does not have great reviews as of Oct. 2020 We will see if there are improvements.

Recreation

AllTrails

AllTrails is our go to app for finding hiking and biking trails. We usually find the trails we like quickly and easily through the app. Reviews are usually pretty good and the ratings are pretty spot on. The length and time is also fair and accurate.

Recreation.gov

Recreation.gov

(from their website)

Discover new experiences, historic landmarks, and outdoor escapes right down the road or across the country. From camping, hiking, and horseback riding to wildlife viewing, monument tours, and ranger-led activities – you can find it on Recreation.gov!

Roadtrippers

Roadtrippers

(from their website)

Your #1 destination for road trip planning, stories, and inspiration. Get the only trip planning tool designed to make your trip longer by celebrating only the best people and places worth a detour.

GPS My City

Self-Guided Walking Tours. If you're in a city that they have listed and you like walking tours but haven't scheduled one or can't fit it into your timeline then this if for you. We shared our bluetooth earpods and enjoyed a self guided tour in New Orleans. It was extremely well done, had a gps map in the app and we could take our time, review audio. And it was free!

Weather

With any weather app. it is important to update your location when you arrive at a camp spot. Location services are sometimes a pain and we have had problems with our location when we have saved

My Radar

My Radar app store preview

Tracking weather and weather conditions where you are at and where you are going is important. Bad weather, lightning, high winds and more are important to track. Even though we've only had to pull in our slides because of high winds on 3 occasions, it's much better to find out before your slide toppers are ripped of or before your awning tries to take off for the land of OZ.

My radar is easy to track storms and more.

Weatherbug

Weatherbug app store preview

Weatherbug is very good about warning you and tracking lightning strikes in your area.

The Weather Channel

We find The Weather Channel does a great job with storm tracking. We are currently watching the path of Hurricane Zeta (Oct. 2020) to make sure we route around any problems. We've been in the RV most of the day because of the rain but we planned our cleaning day and laundromat visit around the rainfall.

Communication

Google Voice

Google Voice is our goto for a free phone number without giving out our actual cell number. When someone calls you using the Google Number that you can select it will go to your regular cell phone on the app and you can send and receive text messages as well.

Kunio has traveled overseas and uses Google Voice to make calls home. All you need is a data connection.

Facebook Messenger

Being on the move without a spot for your friends to find you can be hard. Messenger helps to close that gap. We've been able to connect via Facebook Messenger and visit friends along our route.

Walkie Talkie

For those times when you have little to no cellular service! Be prepared.

Other

Yelp / Google Maps!

Yelp and Google Maps have been wonderful tools in helping us find fun things to do, places to go and adventures to seek!

Google Maps is Kunio's go to for local eats and adventures. Michelle likes Yelp!

Hulu/Netflix

Apple TV, Hulu and Netflix our rainy day entertainment. We subscribe but rarely watch Hulu and Netflix. Our parents have taken over the subscription and watch it. We tend to watch videos on YouTube and use the TVs as our computer monitors for work.

Interestingly enough we have 4 TVs in this RV and the only one that gets used is the main TV for use as our computer monitor. (Apple Mac Mini)

The Apple TV lives in the tech cabinet and the signal gets sent to all of the TVs through the HDMI splitter.
